This adds a field to the status bar which shows how many e-mails are in your inbox. More importantly a small info box appears when you get new mail, even if Firefox is minimised or on another desktop. Gmail Manager also allows you to keep track of multiple gmail accounts, but other solutions may allow this as well I don't know.
